They have an air-conditioned waiting room, tiny espresso mugs, an executive director that knows how to make a good joke, and a long-standing record of excellent customer service.\u00a0 They are a poverty-busting force to be reckoned with. Yep, there are some new kids in town. \u00a0Who are they?\u00a0 LA TONTINIERE NATIONALE (LTN)<\/a>, one of Cameroon\u2019s top four microfinance institutions, Kiva\u2019s newest pilot partner, and the MFI I get to work with closely over the next four months of my Kiva fellowship.<\/p>\n Aside from its pilot partner status, LA TONTINIERE NATIONALE (LTN) is not really \u201cnew\u201d at all.\u00a0 The bank has been around since 1999, was privatized in 2005, and has grown to serve over 8,500 customers since.\u00a0\u00a0 With branches in Cameroon\u2019s largest urban areas, Yaound\u00e9 (the capital)<\/a>, Douala and Bafoussam, LTN provides loans to clients that are owners or managers of \u201cTr\u00e8s Petites Entreprises\u201d (TPEs), or \u201cVery Small Businesses.\u201d \u00a0Whether you are a tailor, a beignet vendor or a hardware store owner, you can apply for an LTN small business loan to help with planning, to purchase equipment or for plain ole\u2019 working capital.<\/p>\n Walking into headquarters, one gets the sense that LTN operates very much like a traditional bank.\u00a0 There is a reception area, a payment window, separate offices for different departments, and the staff is always dressed very professionally.\u00a0 What aren\u2019t so obvious at first glance, however, are the bank\u2019s underlying social objectives.<\/p>\n
